I can't believe this. Rashad was the coolest, kindest person I have ever met. I got to know him while touring with him in Nov-Dec.
I got a call about this earlier today and I haven't been able to grasp this tragedy. I have a lot to say, and typing this has helped me share some stories and get some tears out. Back in October, When the tour first started, it was just DJ Spinn repping the duo who was opening for Chance. Spinn was so down and easy to get along with and when I heard his performing partner was about to join up with us I had some hesitations. First off I'd be giving up my spot on the bus and would have to go sleep in the less luxurious RV for the remainder of the tour. And since I didn't know him yet, I thought there was no way that anyone could be as positive a presence as Spinn was.
But Rashad, man, I couldn't think of any one I would have rather gotten to be around and work with. When shit got stressful during a show, nothing could phase him and he'd make sure you could be cheered out of your mood. When shit was going down after the show because someone wanted to get funny and disrespect our traveling family, he'd be the first to knock him out cold. He and Spinn's hotel room door was always open for anyone who wanted to come in and enjoy themselves.
It was after a show in Lawrence, Kansas that I first really got to know Rashad. He explained to me why he wasn't on the tour for the first couple weeks. Originally the plan was for him to do a small European tour late October and he would've missed a large chunk of Chance's tour.
But on the way to the airport to leave for Europe he was involved in a car crash that just barely took his life. He was grateful to still be around, especially considering the initial reaction to Double Cup. He shared a few reviews for his album that had just come out, the Rolling Stome and Pitchfork reviews. He was so thrilled to be getting the recognition, but even more so to be out touring with Chance. When we were getting back to the bus later that night, we saw someone creeping around. The dude starts walking away from one of the bays with our sound guy's long board.
Now we had been out all night and we're pretty fucked up, but I have never seen anyone move so fast as Rashad did when he sprinted down to alley to catch this motherfucker after the dude had tried to get physical with the sound guy. That motherfucker got away, and he was lucky for that. It was Fargo, North Dakota that I finally got to see him lay a smack down after another punk tried to get stupid. Its mid December, and we were experiencing the first of the polar vortexes. It's late after the show, us dogs are just finishing loading the trailer and I notice a group of people forming outside the bus. Apparently a few college dudes decided to get on the bus uninvited, they then started talking shit about Chicago saying they know how to make it 'clap' too.
By the time I get over there a scrawny white boy is mouthing off to our security guard. His two buddies are begging him to stand down, but dude puts his dukes up old fashioned style, before TJ, our security guard could even react, dudeass is laid out on the icey parking lot courtesy of the impeccable right hand of DJ Rashad.
Rashad wasn't just a cool, upstanding dude to be around, but I credit him and the people I was working with for helping me rediscover my own creativity. When I got hired on to the tour, it was to be a stagehand and a projectionist.
I wasn't familiar with Teklife or what they'd be doing on the tour. It wasn't long until their set was my favorite hour of the night. Inspired by Rashad's insane style of music, I quickly started learning how to VJ (a skill I had never knew) and make live visuals every night of the trip. That experience was so fulfilling and has redirected and inspired a new direction in my life. I can't thank him and Spinn enough for that. I am so glad I was able to work with him and tour the country while on my worst behavior on the account of DJ Rashad. Rest in Peace.
